Measuring parenting

This project sought to develop tools and measures for parent-child relationships. This was an MRC/UVRI (Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Institute) and MRC SPHSU – University of Glasgow project undertaken with Dr Siu Godfrey as collaborator from 2012-2016. This project aimed to develop valid self-report measures of key dimensions of parent-child relationships that can be used with semi-literate parents and their children (around 12 years old). We particularly developed outcome measures for interventions intended to improve child attachment and modify authoritarian or harsh parenting, inequitable gender roles and other predictors of gender based violence. We intended them to be appropriate for other societies in sub-Saharan Africa with broadly similar cultures, subject to sensitive translation. Data is being written up.
